Learning any language is something that does not happen overnight. And a task is not completed overnight. It is a cumulative process that takes place in stages, in which a person acquires something in each of them, until he reaches what he hopes to reach from the different levels of performance in practicing this language.
Speech skill in language teaching is one of the basic skills that represent one of the purposes of language study, even if it is itself a means of communication with others. The need for this skill increased in the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century after the end of World War II. Therefore, we find modern methods of language teaching aiming to urge students to speak as much as possible.
In order to achieve this goal in teaching the Arabic language, the Darullughah Wadda’wah institute in Bangil Pasuruan had been interested in this skill since its inception until it has now become one of the successful Islamic institutes in teaching the skill of speech. There are several factors that help this institute to achieve this achievement, including the presence of an Arab environment that supports them to develop their skills in speaking Arabic, as well as most of the lessons materials are written in this language, such as language sciences such as grammar, morphology, logic, rhetoric or jurisprudence, interpretation, hadith and so on, and most of the teachers are graduates from the Middle East, From Yemen, Mecca, Medina, and more.
And the person who laid the foundations for this institute until it became famous and prestigious like now, whether at the national or international level is Habib Hasan bin Ahmad Baharun. He is the founder of this institute, which has a great interest in teaching the Arabic language, especially with regard to the communication skill in it. Before establishing his institute, he toured one institute to another in order to introduce the importance of the Arabic language as the everyday language of communication. After several years of his tours from one institute to another, starting from East Java and Central Java to West Java, after he had experiences and experiences in teaching Arabic language, in 1981 he founded his institute, which he called the House of Language and Da`wah (Darullughah Wadda’wah)
According to the name of this institute, the student learns in his first year, focusing on his ability in the Arabic language as the everyday language of communication. In the diligence of Habib Hasan bin Ahmad Baharun and his efforts, Darullughah Wadda’wah Institute has become one of the institutes that are considered successful in teaching the Arabic language in Indonesia, and the reputation of this institute is based on the Arabic language, even if this institute is mentioned, what occurred to people this Arabic language. The Arabic language is the preferred magnet for this institute until the students in this institute came from various provinces and islands in Indonesia, but among them the students came from neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam and others. The progress and fame of this institute today was a fruit of the efforts of the beloved Hassan bin Ahmed Baharoun, and then his son and favorite successor, Habib Ali Zain al-Abidin son of Habib Hasan bin Ahmad Baharun, continues to follow it.
He required all his pupils to always speak Arabic. He always urged them to speak the Arabic language with the intention of following and continuing the language that came out of the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, and being the language of the Qur’an and the language of the people of Paradise. Habib Hassan bin Ahmad Baharun often said that speaking in Arabic is a way to enjoy the words that came from the words of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. Most of the Arabic words such as “went out,” “entered,” and “took,” and others came from the words of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. As long as we spoke the Arabic language with such intent, then what we spoke considered as worship. Most of man’s deeds were speech, so what would be our reward if we spoke in Arabic with such intentions?
He made his institute like Darullughah it means a house of language as it appeared in the name of this institute, which is the house of language and dakwah, and the linguistic environment was intensely structured. The students are obliged to live in the residence of the institute and they are not allowed to go out at all except for an urgent need, such as having sickness and so on. They are not allowed to carry mobile phones, laptop computers, and others so as not to disrupt their focus on learning and not disturb their interaction in the application of communication in the Arabic language, because the permissibility of using these things reduces their interaction with their owners in love with playing them. As well as preventing students from leaving their homes in order for them to have the opportunity to apply communication in the Arabic language, because most leave the pesantren making them less learning that reduces their opportunity to interact with their friends by communicating in Arabic.
And his students were also required to wear a shirt and a turban in all official activities at the institute, such as the process of learning and teaching, praying in congregation in the mosque and welcoming private guests of the institute, among others. That outfit is a special garment for Arabs whose daily communication language was Arabic. Even if someone wears a shirt and a turban, the one who sees him imagines that he is skilled in communicating with the Arabic language, as indicated by Barthes saying: “the language of fashion” means that the dress that is Wear it, Therefore, the shirt and turban, which became official uniforms at the House of Language and Da`wah Institute, according to the researcher, were a sign language indicating that the students who wore it should always speak Arabic. Wearing that dress makes them do the same as someone who wears that dress does means always speaking Arabic. If pupils look like this, they challenge themselves to speak Arabic and are ashamed if they cannot speak Arabic. This feeling is what Habib Hassan bin Ahmed Baharon wanted, as exciting for his students, to be ashamed if they could not speak Arabic.
